Hispanic Representation in the U.S. Congress
by Victor Pinzon

Americas Global Foundation (AGF) has been researching and studying the Hispanic representation in the various levels of our government.

The following is part of those findings.
The Hispanic population in the United States at the end of 2002 was over 40 million when you add the about 4 million residents in Puerto Rico. That means Hispanics are 40/273 =14.6% of the total population of the United States.

Thus, according to these population figures Hispanics should have 14 to 15 Senators in the U.S. Senate. The reality is that today, Hispanics have ZERO Senators representing them in the U.S. Senate.

Similarly, Hispanics should have (14.6% x 435 = 63,5) over 63 members in the U.S. House of Representatives. The reality is that Hispanics have only 23 members in the House of Representatives. And, they do not seem to work together.

Also, a known fact is that everything in life revolves around politics and around our government representatives. Unless a significant segment of the population, as Hispanics represent, are properly represented at the top or senior levels of government -where policy is determined, the budget is distributed, acquisitions and jobs are determined- Hispanics will continue to be ignored, underserved, and discriminated.

AGF has developed a strategic plan to contribute to solve the above serious problem. AGF invites anyone interested in this issue and others to join AGF, contribute or donate funds, resources or volunteer time. We need to continue researching, studying, evaluating the conditions and facts. Then, formalize a plan of action to proceed to the successful implementation of said plan.

One of AGF's goal is to encourage Hispanics and others to join us in the effort to elect the first Hispanic Senator during the next four years. Then, work on developing leaders -professionals, honest, dynamic, with a Hemispheric and global vision, who represent all Hispanics- so that within the next ten to 14 years we can start achieving the proportionate representation Hispanics in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives.

By reaching that level of representation, we could then really influence policy that will provide the equal opportunities and resources, we Hispanics deserve in the United States. And, most important, we can also, influence policy in Washington and provide the resources to contribute to the effective development of our people in Latin America and the Caribbean. Much like the Jewish American community in the United States have been successfully working for Israel.

Remember, United We Prevail!
